About Me

I am…

An Earthling.
I’m committed to cherishing and protecting our shared home, celebrating its wonders, and fostering a deeper connection with the natural world.

European.
The cradle of civilisation. Land of philosophy, science, history, engineering. I see a future united Europa, taking her place as one of the world’s super-powers.

An Englishman.
A nation of shop-keepers. Founders of the English Enlightenment. A land of tea drinkers, writers, inventors and radical feminists. I see England as a modern European nation and the centre for business, technology and culture. (I say, jolly good show, pip-pip cheerio.)

A (Software) Engineer.
I’ve been a professional software developer since 1996 and a hobbyist since the mid 1980s on my BBC Micro. Most of my work on this site is about technology and software development.

An Epicurean.
No, I’m not a drunkard or a glutton. Epicurus was a philosopher who advocated simple pleasures as the path to happiness. To have enough to cover your needs and keep the company of genuine friends. I attribute a lot of my weight-loss to applying the Epicurean principles. (And Weight-Watchers.)

Civis Anglia, Civis Europa, Civis Terra.

Regards, Bill. 🦉

The idea is to let server operators drop IPv4 entirely — except for a single gateway — while still remaining accessible to legacy clients. It’s a bridge, not a wall. This post explains how Sixgate works in practice: …

Sixgate – IPv6 Without Leaving Anyone Behind

The internet is slowly, stubbornly moving toward IPv6. Server operators are increasingly comfortable deploying services on IPv6-only infrastructure, but there’s a catch. Many clients still live in IPv4-only environments, especially those served by legacy ISPs or locked into older hardware. This creates a frustrating asymmetry. Any website going IPv6-only will risk cutting off a portion …
